7 Must-Try Foods on the Amalfi Coast
Fresh mozzarella, fresh seasonal seafood, famous Sorrento lemons – the food on the Amalfi Coast is some of the most incredible in all of Italy.
A vacation on the Amalfi Coast is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the beauty of fresh, seasonal food. Virtually everything you’ll find on the coast – from the seafood to the produce to the pasta – is freshly prepared and locally sourced, resulting in flavorful dishes you’ll be thinking about long after you return home.
(1) Mozzarella di Bufala
Italy’s Campania region makes the best buffalo mozzarella in the world, trademarked Mozzarella di Bufala Campana. It’s soft, rich, and completely decadent on its own or on pizza (another must-eat in the region).
(2) Insalata Caprese
On a similar note, you can’t leave the namesake of the Caprese salad (named after the island of Capri, located just off the Amalfi Coast) without sampling the region’s juicy tomatoes, freshly torn basil, famous mozzarella, and local olive oil in one delicious dish.
(3) Sorrento lemons
Sorrento’s famous lemons – sweet, juicy, and virtually seedless – can grow nearly as big as your head. Try them alone or in the form of limoncello (see #6).
(4) Scialetielli ai fruitti di mare
This dish combines the impeccable seafood of the coast (clams, mussels, shrimp, and more) with the region’s special brand of pasta, scialetielli – a long, flat type of spaghetti with square sides.
(5) Anchovies
Skeptics should keep on open mind on this one; these anchovies are not your standard canned fare. Anchovies on the Amalfi Coast – served alone, with pasta, or made into Colatura di Alici (anchovy syrup) – taste bright, fresh, and flavorful.
(6) Limoncello
You can’t avoid the ubiquitous limoncello on the Amalfi Coast, and you won’t want to – this local lemon liquor is sweet, potent, and addictive. Drink it ice cold after lunch or dinner.
(7) Gelato
While gelato is popular throughout Italy (and was created in Florence), there is no better place to enjoy it by the seaside. Stroll the streets of Amalfi or Capri with a refreshing lemon, almond, or coconut-infused ice cream, and you’ll never want to leave the coast.
